White Muslin Background
What is the difference in background paper and muslin?
As far as quality of picture and whiteness of whites and black of blacks, is there a large difference?
The main advantage of muslin is that it is reusable. You can also paint on one side using fabric paint and have the other side the color of the muslin. It can also provide texture, but most portraits throw the backgound out of focus so it’s not necessarily a big advantage.
An advantage that paper has is when you want a seamless transition between the floor and background for something like a full body portrait. Paper takes a nice smooth curve and muslin really doesn’t.
In terms of the whites and blacks, that is totally in control of the photogrpaher and how he, or she, lights the background.
If I have a gray background (muslin or paper) and throw enough light on it, it will be white in the picture. If the light is somewhere in between, it will be some shade of gray. If I don’t throw any light on it, it will be black.
The same holds for white backgrounds. No light, they go black. Some light and they are gray. Enough light, they are white.
If you wanted the most complete black possible, you would use something like velvet.
