For years, the rage in photography has been color. The old black and white methods of taking pictures were all but forgotten. Over the past little while, new interest in the black and white photos has surfaced. One has to admit there is something magical about these.
Actually to have photos processed in the standard format it is quite expensive if you want them in black and white instead of color. With digital photography, this is quite easily accomplished with detail. You can almost instantly change those color photos to black and white. There is no need to wash the color out of the photo or to switch film. This is what makes it so much fun. Although it is becoming more favored, it is not something many amateur photographers are NOT experimenting with. Yet many have digital software that gives them the capability to do this.
If you fall into this category then next time you are editing your photos try converting them to black and white. You do not have to keep them that way, but you may find that you have some interesting shots. The actual conversion does not take any time, however you are going to want to maintain the quality and you need to learn how to do that.
Your camera may have the feature of allowing you to convert your picture to black and white right there for you. This is a great feature because if it is not quite what you want but has some potential then you can retake the shot right there and do your adjustments.
When taking your shot try not to focus all your attention on the subject. See what the camera sees, which is everything that is in the frame. Some cameras have the feature of switching to the black and white mode before the picture is taken. This is good because you can see what you are going to get. Learn to pay attention to what the viewfinder is indicating to you about light. It will also guide you as to whether you or the subject needs to move in order to make the most of the shot.
Instead of using color for contrast, you are going to be using shades to create your contrast. Once thing you really do not want is a blurred black and white photo. The image must be sharp in order to make the best of the contrast.
Lighting is very important in getting the right contrast. Colors are distinguishable; in black and white, you do not have this advantage. The quickest way to master your techniques with lighting is by trial and error. Meaning practice and more practice.
It is interesting to see the differences in a photo that has been taken in color and then changed to black and white. Often people are so impressed with the black and white they will end up using that one for their project. We can all thank the wonderful world of technology for allowing us the benefits of capturing the moment, in our choice of color or black and white.
