How do I lock the built in flash for the Nikon D40? I want to add another flash/speedlight unit on top.?
How would I prevent the original built in light from popping up for the Nikon D40? The problem is that when I install another speedlight on top of it, the original light pops open as well. How would I lock it so that I’m only using the additional flash?

1) Switch the camera to P, A, S, or M modes. Stay away from the full-auto only modes, which will cause the flash to pop up.
2) It sounds like your hotshoe flash is not a dedicated Nikon flash, so it doesn’t talk to the camera to say “don’t pop up, I’m here in the hotshoe.” A dedicated Nikon flash will keep the flash from popping up.
3) Since you apparently don’t have a dedicated flash, what I suggest is switching to M or manual mode. Set the shutter speed to 1/250 or 1/500 (the maximum sync speed is 1/500) and select the correct aperture based upon your flash. Your best bet with a non-dedicated flash is what is known as “automatic” mode, where the flash reads the light and shuts itself off when it detects that the flash exposure is correct. 4) With a Nikon dedicated flash (SB-400, SB-600, or SB-800), you can shoot in TTL mode.
