Through Umbrella Softbox
What’s the biggest dif. between using an Umbrella and a softbox?
I’ve never really used an umbrella before, but the lights I’m looking at (Alien Bee) have a package that include umbrella’s instead of soft-boxes.
One is shoot through, and the other one says that it’s silver lined to bounce the light out or something… Sounds weird.
Should I just stick with what I know and buy softboxes and toss the Umbrella’s, or are they similar enough to figure out?

I don’t think you’ll see a big difference in the quality of light from a softbox or a shoot through umbrella. Both give soft, diffused light. You can control the light a little easier with a softbox than an umbrella, but alternatively, unless you are getting a big softbox, a shoot through can give more illumination for a full length shot of a person.
Refector umbrellas are “the” orginal umbrella. You point your AB away from the subject and into the inside of the umbrella. The light hits the umbrella and reflects back on to the subject. It is a little harsher light than a shoot through, almost more like direct flash, but still a pleasing effect.
