Strobe Studio Flash

why does pop-up flash of AF cameras, digital of film does not synchronize with electronic studio strobe?
I have a Nikon F80 and lately a Canon Rebel XT DSLR, they are both with pop-up flash. when I try to use the pop-up flash, to trigger the stdio strobe, it does not work. The pop-up flash fires earlier than the strobe.
I would guess that the pre-flash made by the pop-up flash is tripping the studio strobe before the shutter is open. (The pre-flash helps with estimating the proper exposure. Something else, you aren’t set to red eye reduction are you? That pre flash is even more powerful.)
You can buy a pc cord adapter plug for the F80′s hotshoe and plug the studio strobes directly into the camera. Or you could take a larger flash mount it onto the camera place it on manual and still use the studio strobes with the slave synch. (You would have to use a manual camera setting too and adjust exposure by ratio at the power pack and manual dial down on the camera flash.)
