What are strobes and flash heads?
I am interested in purchasing a beauty dish. But I have read you need a strobe or flash head for it. What is that? Does that mean it is not a continuous light?
You are correct. Generally, beauty dishes are a light-modifying accessory that is used with strobe heads or monolights. These are studio strobe lights, where strobe heads are attached to a central power pack, and monolights are self-contained (the strobe and power pack are one unit). Such lights usually have some sort of continous “modeling light” so you can position the lights and even visually compare lighting ratios prior to testing with Polaroid or digital proofing. However, the modeling lights are dim enough to not play a significant role in the overall light output when making the actually exposure with the strobes.
It may be possible to get continuous lighting systems that can also use a beauty dish. Check some of the high-output daylight-balanced flourescent systems, for instance.
