Photography Studio Lighting
Make your own photography studio /lighting how?

I’m doing wedding photos, and I need to set up kind of like a studio. . .

what is the difference between normal umberella and one for photography studios?
Is just one umberella and light enough?

I’m obviously a complete beginner at tsetting up a studio, so please help me out with as much as you can think of about this

If by “normal umbrella” you mean the variety that you use to protect against rain, then there are numerous differences:
* photographic umbrellas are covered with a fabric that either reflects light, or diffuses light that bounces through it (both types exist and both have a purpose)
* photographic umbrellas come with a standardized pole that allows you to mount them to umbrella stands and specialized swiffels.

And no, the photographic type does not protect against rain, and you cannot use the “rain” umbrellas for photographic purposes. The similarity is purely in shape, not at all in function.

For a reasonable lighting setup, you will need at least two lightsources that are under your control: studio lights with umbrellas or softboxes will work very well. One is normally not enough. And in addition to the umbrellas you will need studio lights (either flashes, studio strobes or photographic lights), a a backdrop that your models are photographed against, and some studio chairs or benches.

Having gone through the whole situation myself, I can recommend a book: “Master Lighting Guide for Portrait Photographers” by Christopher Grey that teaches you the most basic lighting setups, which situations you may want to use them for, and how you arrange them. An excellent primer.

Another recommendation: have a look at the Strobist website (URL attached). This site is dedicated to teaching you how to use off-camera lighting. It teaches you all about umbrellas, softboxes, barndoors, etc. If you’re a newbie in this business, that site is a must (and it’s totally free).

Finally, there is an online retailer, “Midwest Photo Exchange” (URL attached), that sells “Strobist Kits”: very reasonably priced entry level light and umbrella sets for situations like yours. Simply putting a shopping list with all the required stands, swiffels, shades, umbrellas, reflectors, adaptors etc. together can be a daunting task for a newbie. Buy there, and buy in confidence.
