Studio Lighting – what to buy?
I’m a beginner with portrait photography and need to get myself some studio lighting. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about it. I know that you get what you pay for and I would love to spend thousands buying myself the best equipment in existence, but unfortunately I’m not in the position to do so. For the price range, how does that equipment look?
If it’s no good can you show me some examples of what I might need?
I mainly do baby and children photography, using a Canon 400D with a 430EX speedlight and some reflectors.

I have seen photogs use two worklights, aluminum foil and cardboard barndoors to get fantastic photos. is it ideal? no. is it professional? no.
for portraits you basically need three lights – a key light, a fill light and a hair light. that will do a good job on 90% of all portrait photos.
how much you spend is up to you. there are 3 light kits that sell for under $200 and 3 light kits that are over $2000. its a cost/benefit analysis based on your business model and specific needs.
dont forget to save a few bucks for backdrops!
