Off Camera Cord

My Canon off camera shoe cord does not work on my 40d with my 580 ex ll, it does work with my Sigma flash?
Is there another cord I should purchase?
If you can possibly afford it, consider getting the Canon transmitter.
I usually try to do everything the cheap way, but the flash triggers I tried to rig up were driving me nuts. When my transmitter arrived, I took it out of the box and BINGO, it worked right away – such a nice change!
Now I’m free to put my flash wherever I feel like, and it works every time.
