Monoculars are just like binoculars, except they only have one telescope. The monoculars function on the same principle, getting images that are far from the viewer to become closer. While in a telescope, the image is usually inverted, the monocular uses two prisms, so it shows in the right orientation.
Because it’s smaller and weighs much less, bird watchers, hikers and golfers often carry a monocular with them.
It’s also used by those that don’t have much room and need something to pack.
Because you can use them with just one eye, monoculars also bring with them their own set of problems, the same problems one has when he uses a telescope. That’s why a lot of people prefer the bulkier binoculars than a telescope or a monocular.
They are used by a lot of astronomers, as monoculars are preferable when you want to look at stationary objects.
History says that monoculars existed in the past, including in ancient Arabia. There was even information about telescopic monoculars being made in the 17th century, mainly to be used by officers during war or in sports. Using it, you could see soldiers from a distance, and find out if they were friends or enemies.
The first case of documented history says that the first telescope maker was Hans Lippershey, but that’s only what can be found on paper. He wasn’t the first one to make such gadgets.
You can find monoculars at all kinds of prices, ranging from very cheap to very expensive. If we’re talking about the cheap versions made for kids, they can magnify images 3 or 4 times. If you want true magnification, like 30x, you will have to pay much more.

There are also night vision monoculars, which combine a light intensifier tube with the glass lens system to provide a great image during night time. They also come with an infrared illuminator, which gives you vision even in pitch black situations.
