Minolta Maxxum Stsi Film Camera

Minolta Camera Issue?
I have a Minolta STsi Maxxum. I’m currently attempting to get into photography so this my first time using it. The camera is used, and hasn’t been touched in years. I put in new batteries and new film. The frame is set to 1 on the display to show the film was loaded correctly.
The problem is the camera will not take pictures. I have tried it with the flash on and off, and simply get numbers in the display (for instance 60, 125, and so on), but no picture gets taken.
What am I doing wrong? So you know the film I’m using is old. Several years in fact so I don’t know if that would effect it. I am also trying this with the various presets because I know lighting can be a factor, but it won’t take a picture regardless of what I have it set to. If you have any in sights I would appreciate them.
Those numbers are shutter speeds. As for the rest: if you’re also seeing a blinking dot, the camera is telling you that the current exposure settings make it impossible to take a picture. This can be due to a)too small an aperture b)too fast a shutter speed c)film that is too slow and d)a combination of a,b, and c.
Try setting it on full automatic and try it both inside and outside in sunlight. If it still doesn’t work it might simply be broken.
Not to discourage you, but I owned one of these cameras and it broke and it’s certainly not worth repairing.
It’s a Personal opinion, but in 2008 it’s better to get an entry-level DSLR instead of an SLR. As a learning tool they are much better. You can see your results immediately and adjust your technique accordingly and anytime you look at your pics in the future you will still be able to display what camera settings you used. With film if you intend to compare the effect of different camera settings you need to record and save them yourself and make sure you can match each roll to its notes. Akward and error-prone. Plus film development is pretty bad for the environment…
