Why do strobe/flash lights seem to be more expensive than continous light sets? Which is better for beginners?
There is very little in the way of technology in continuous lighting. Just some unregulated power and an incandescent bulb.
Beginners and students can learn more from being able to look at what the light is doing to the subject with using continuous lighting. The lighting can be adjusted easily as it is moved around or up and down in relation to the subject of the photograph.
Studio flash systems have expensive regulated power supplies, flash heads with “modeling” lights and fans and the cables necessary to sync them all together.
You might want to drop by one of your local photography studios in your town and take a look at what they have and what it costs to maintain it. After that visit you may find you LOVE the idea of continuous lighting.
