Can a digital lens be used on a film camera?
I see many people on the web wanting to use their old film lenses on a digital camera. I’m going the other direction, still using a film camera, but wanting to get different lenses. It seems most lenses advertised these days state they are designed for digital, making it harder to find lenses specifically for film cameras. Assuming I stick with the same brand, mount type, etc., can I use a digital lens on a film camera?
If so, related question. I have seen lenses with built-in image stabilazion. Will this feature work when used in conjuction with a film camera?
It’s obvious the first two responders don’t use professional gear (it’s okay… we can all learn something). The answer to your question is YES… but it depends on the lens!!
Some lenses are full frame lenses while others are made for smaller sensors found in ‘some’ dslr bodies.
I can give you examples based on Nikon and Olympus the the basic concept of checking your lenses themselves fits regardless of the mount system.
For Nikon and Canon, pretty much all but the top end camera’s use smaller ‘dx’ sized sensors. Since these sensors are smaller they don’t require as much glass to provide an effective photograph so alot of lens makers currently offer lenses built for the dx sensor. These lenses cannot be used on full frame sensors.
At the high end of both Nikon and Canon they do offer DSLR’s with full frame sensors. If you use a lens built for the smaller dx sensor on one of these higher end full frame sensor DSLR’s, then yes, you will see ‘vignetting’ where the cornes of your picture will be dramatically darkened.
No, many lens makers also offer full frame lenses such as Sigma, Canon, & Nikon. These lenses will work with both types of sensors but they are made larger and heavier than
an equivalent dx only sized lens.

As for the built in IS, it depends on the film body. You need to say which one here or check that with the body/lens manufacturer.
