Is Sony Vegas 5 support a green screen for editing vids?
“Green Screen” is one example of a video effect known as chroma keying. And yes, Sony Vegas has a Chroma Key effect. The idea is, you shoot video in front of a green background (or blue or any other color, but due to technical aspects of modern video, green is your best choice). In the video editor, you select that background as you “key” and the video editor makes it transparent. That makes it easy to superimpose your non-green parts over some other background.
I have used this myself… you add the chroma keying effect to a video track in Vegas, and select the color you’d like to use as a key. That’s pretty much it. Vegas can also do the related effect luma-keying, which lets you set anything below a certain brightness level as transparent.
If you want to learn lots more about this technique, go rent “Sin City”. Director Robert Rodriguez used extensive green screen techniques on Sin City (basically, most of every set was “virtual”, created only in the computer), and you can see some of the all-green real sets and learn more about this technique from a modern master.

You’ll notice one key element — he’s got a very flat green screen setup. The most common mistake is getting wrinkles in a bedsheet or some other home-made green screen that limits its effectiveness for chroma keying. Good lighting is a good idea, too, but it’s less than critical when you have your green screen set up properly… and lighting can’t undo the problems of a poorly set up green screen.
