Flash Trigger Studio

Can my Nikon SB-800 flash be used to trigger IR sensitive studio lights without firing itself?
I have seen the command mode with the flash but if the flash unit itself is not firing, the studio lights do not. I am looking for an alternative to buying an IR remote or using the sync lead.
If you set the SB-800 to it’s lowest setting in M mode it should trigger the studio lights as long as your inside or not in bright light (confuses the strobes) and it shouldn’t contribute much of anything to the exposure. But honestly using the SB-800 is a bit of a waste. I’m sure you use it for other things though.
A good radio trigger is worth it’s money. Skyports for example have 4 groups you can use. You can put each strobe on it’s own group. When your metering you don’t have to have someone else popping the strobe for you, just plug the transmitter into your meter, set to group A and fire. Only group A will fire. Then set to group B, only group B will fire. Then you can set the transmitter to fire all groups and your rocking and rolling.
I mention Skyports because I know them, but there are better less expensive units available now as well.
