Flash Shoe Mount

alienbees vs. shoe mount flash? I just bought an alienbees b400 and b800 to do portraits, animal portraits?
and some still life as well as field work and they seem like they are not going to be bright enough. So my first question is, should a b400 and b800 be bright enough for portraits?
If not, then i’m thinking about returning the b400 and either getting a metz 48 shoe mount flash or a alienbees b1600 flash unit. I don’t have shoe mount flash – just the built in one that comes with a canon 40D. So my other question is, should i get a shoe mount flash or a b1600? Will a metz 48 sync with my camera when it’s not mounted on it and sync with my other lights?- i dont fully understand the description of it. thanks for any help you can give a beginner! ( sorry this is so wordy)
Your lights should be perfect for both types of portraits…they should most definitely be bright enough.
