Film Stock Kodak
With a film stock with an exposure latitude of +3/-2, how would I apply the Zone system?
Someone gave me a roll of Kodak’s Portra 400NC film which has an exposure latitude of +3/-2. I’m used to films where both overexposed and underexposed latitude are equal.
The way my camera’s spot meter shows me exposure is in half stops from +3 down to 0, then counting to -3. So I see +3, +2.5, +2, +1.5, and so on and so forth down to -3. When measuring exposure I’d always measure an object that I labeled “medium gray” or “18% gray” (Zone V) at the 0 marker. When I could exposure that so that it’s exposure marker was on the 0, I knew it was exposed correctly (or so I assume).
However, that was for the film stocks with an exposure latitude that was equal in terms of over and under exposure (e.g., both 3 stops over and under exposed would still have detail +3/-3). But since this film stock is +3/-2, does that mean my Zone V would now lie at the +.5 stop exposure marker instead of 0? I figure anything below -2 stops underexposed won’t show up, so that will be my Zone 10, which would make Zone V around or a little beyond +.5 stops overexposed.
Is this right? I’m still new at this.
What do you mean by dealing with the shadows and highlights separately?
I think you have things flip-flopped. Below -2 will be your Zone 0, and above +3 will be your Zone X. The slightly frustrating news is the 0 is still your Zone V. If the latitude isn’t symmetric, the exposure isn’t quite even. This is why Ansel Adams used to use pre-exposure to get the film going so to speak. Just deal with your shadow zones separately from your highlight zones and you’ll be fine. If you use +.5 as Zone V things you expect to be middle gray will come out on the light side.
