Holography: Is index matching absolutely necessary when burning flexible film?
I’m soon to be moving up in the world and shooting on slightly larger-format emulsion (4X5), and this will of course be much more affordable if I leave my comfort zone of shooting on glass plates…
Can VRP-M 4X5 sheets of flexible film be sandwiched between glass without the mess and hassle of index-matching fluid?
That all depends on how fussy you are! Yes, you can do it – i never use index matching fluid. I often sandwhich holographic emulsion this way and i find it effective enough – keeps peoples greasy paws off the film. Yes the back reflections are annoying, but its pretty annoying having to lock fluid in place. You could calculate the Fresnel back reflections etc. but i doubt that it is appropriate here, since this is quite subjective.
